Safety tips for working with chemicals

Almost every single job in Georgia can put employees in contact with chemicals, even if they are simple chemicals to clean a bathroom or kitchen. Almost every workplace has some sort of chemical on its property. Here are some safety tips for working with chemicals in Atlanta.

You should follow all procedures created by your employer when dealing with chemicals. Also follow guidelines provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Never veer from these procedures as it could cause you to become ill.

Always wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by your employer. These items are given to you for a reason when hired. Make sure you take advantage of having them each time you work with chemicals.

Double and triple check that all of the containers are labeled correctly and that the chemicals are stored in the right containers. Never use a chemical that is stored improperly or not labeled correctly.

Read the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) prior to using any chemical in the workplace so you fully understand the hazards involved with each one.

Use the chemicals only for their intended purposes and nothing else. Using them for something other than their intended purpose could cause injury, illness or even death.

Never eat or drink when using chemicals at work. The chemicals could get into your food and then into your body. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after using chemicals before you eat, drink, or touch your face.

Store chemicals in ventilated, dry areas that are also cool.
