Worker injured in power line accident

On Sept. 24 at approximately 2:30 p.m., a 35-year-old worker was injured while working on power lines in Port Wentworth. The man was shocked while working on power lines in the woods near Bonnybridge Road as a subcontractor for Georgia Power. The worker is employed by Sumpter Utilities, a company based in South Carolina. It was not stated exactly how the accident occurred, only that a jolt of electricity went through the man.

Following the workplace accident, unidentified coworkers called for emergency assistance and performed CPR and administered an AED until help arrived. Firefighters took over treatment upon their arrival, then turned the man over to Southside Fire/EMS workers. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He was reported to be breathing under his own power when he was taken from the scene.

The Port Wentworth Chief of Police praised the injured man’s coworkers for their actions, stating that they will deserve the credit if the man survives. A spokesperson for Georgia Power deferred comments to Sumpter Utilities, which did not immediately have information regarding the incident.

Georgia workers and contractors are protected by workers’ compensation statutes. An employer must provide insurance to compensate those who are injured in a workplace accident for their lost wages and medical bills. A personal injury attorney with experience in workers’ compensation cases may be able to help those who have suffered serious or permanent injuries to negotiate a settlement. If an employer does not have workers’ compensation insurance, an attorney may bring a lawsuit against the employer for additional damages, including pain and suffering.
