Canton, Georgia company cited for fatal workplace accident

The Atlanta-East Area Office of the Occupational safety and Health Administration opened an investigation last October into safety issues at a Canton, Georgia company after a worker was killed in a workplace accident at the facility. OSHA recently issued several workplace safety violations against the company.

The industrial accident involved a hopper machine. Authorities say that an employee was killed trying to remove a piece of cardboard from the hopper. Officials say that the machine did not have a guard. The director of the Atlanta-East OSHA office says that, “In this case, a tragic loss resulted from equipment that could easily have been guarded.”

In all, OSHA issued eight citations to Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation after the accident investigation. Companies are given 15 days to challenge a citation, comply, or seek an informal conference with OSHA concerning the citation.

Workplace safety is an important issue. Most people are aware that construction workers are exposed to numerous hazards while on the job. But the truth of the matter is that workers in many industries can be exposed to hazards that can cause harm.

People in a desk job may experience a variety of health issues, if proper ergonomics are not in placed, or if a health hazard is found on the premises of the business. But, employees who use heavy equipment may be exposed to workplace safety issues that result in a distinct accident.

Those ideas are embedded in the basis for workplace safety laws, and also workers’ compensation laws at some level. The Department of Labor has its eyes on safety issues every day. In Fact, when a serious industrial accident occurs, the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration often investigates the accident for safety issues to protect workers in the future from a repeat performance.

Often, OSHA may issue citations to a company found in violation of workplace safety issues to give teeth to safety rules. But, those citations do not provide much remedy to a worker injured in an accident. That is where workers’ compensation laws come into play, providing injured workers with resources after suffering a workplace accident or injury.
